We are Worshipping Warriors – We have Courage like David

This year our theme is“We are Worshipping Warriors”. In order for our children to become true worshipers they must learn to worship God in spirit and in truth.  We must teach our children to pray and to praise in all circumstances.

We will continue the series looking at David who was a worshipping warrior and lived with Courage.

1.Second Samuel is in the Old Testament. It was written about the reign of King David and his faith in God.

2. David had a heart for God. He is an example of a worshipping warrior.

After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’

Acts 13:22

3. When we are worshipping warriors we live a courageous life like David lived.

David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the Lord is finished.

Nursery/Toddler Resources:



Bravery Bags – Have different lunch bags with items hidden in them.  Put things with different textures like: cotton balls, yarn, paper, etc.  Have the children put their hand in the bags, without looking, and guess what is in the bags.  Talk with them about being brave putting their hand in the bags with out knowing what’s in there.

Talk with the children about being brave.  What does it mean to be brave?  Who do they think is brave?
Read 1 Samuel 17:2-11, 16, 40, 45-50 (NIRV) aloud to the children.

Have the children do the following motions as you read:

David: squat down like you are short

Goliath: stand on your tip-toes to be tall


Build a Giant

Make a giant out of whichever type of blocks you are using with your children: legos, duplos, wooden unit blocks, etc. use a ball to represent the rock that David used and let children knock down the giant like David.

D&G5 4&5 yr oldslesson ideas

For this lesson the children will make a stone

For this project you will need heavy cardstock (8×11 or so) for
each child, scissors, five small pebbles for each child, craft glue, a small
piece of yarn for each child, and markers. Each child will cut a pouch shape
from their cardstock. This will represent David’s pouch. Then they will glue the
bit of string across the top to look like a tie. The children should glue the
five pebbles on the pouch and write “The Battle is the Lord’s – 1 Samual 17:47.”
Small children could use “stones” cut from felt and have the verse printed on paper for them.

Have the kids cut the head and arms out and tape or glue to brown

. Cut the label out that says, “My Name Is David. I killed Goliath 1 Sam 17:49-51”.

“David, David, Goliath” – play the game of “Duck, Duck, Goose” to the words of “David, David, Goliath”. When Goliath is called, the child jumps up and races around the circle trying to get back to their spot before the other child does.

Musical Parade

Give each child a musical instrument to use (tambourine, triangle, etc.) Teach them this song:

Tune: (“Pop Goes the Weasel”)

Goliath had a sword and shield.

Goliath was a giant.

David slung a rock at him.

Down went the giant.

Start a parade singing this song while using the instruments.

David was his name    (Sing to the tune of “B-i-n-g-o”)

There was a shepherd boy who sang many songs of       praise,        D-A-V-I-D, D-A-V-I-D, D-A-V-I-D, and David was his name.
He met Goliath with faith in God, and Goliath fell that day,       D-A-V-I-D, D-A-V-I-D, D-A-V-I-D, and David was his name.
He learned to trust the Lord each day and David was his name,       D-A-V-I-D, D-A-V-I-D, D-A-V-I-D, and David was his name.
A man from God’s own heart was he, and David was his name,       D-A-V-I-D, D-A-V-I-D, D-A-V-I-D, and David was his name.

Here is an interactive way to tell the story of David and Goliath:

courage cards-Cut out and read each card. Ask how each child could show courage and stand strong in each situation.  Tell children to really think about it and put themselves in their shoes. How hard would it be to show so much courage without God! As you are thinking about each one, remember that God helps us through and will never leave our side!

Creation Station

1 Sam 16:1-3

Tell your child the bible story(Samuel Obeys God) before doing the craft. Talk about the bible story while your child does the craft.

Point to Make:I obey God because I love Him.

Learning the Message:  God told Samuel to find the new king He had chosen.  Samuel obeyed God.  Samuel put oil on David’s head to show that David would be the new king.  We are going to use oil too, to make our pictures look different. Samuel loved God and obeyed Him.  We can obey God and do what is right too.  What are some ways we can do what is right?

Craft:Oil Pictures Supplies Needed:

newspaper cooking oil pie tins white paper crayons cotton balls

Cover table with newspaper; pour a small amount of oil into the pie tin.  Have your child use crayons to draw a picture and color it in.  When your child is finished coloring, have him/her place their picture face down on newspaper and use cotton balls  to rub a small amount of oil over the back of their picture.  After the paper is dry, have your child hold it up to the light to see how the oil changed the picture.
