Living a life of faith – Paul- Following Jesus

Theme- Hebrews 11 tells us that it is impossible to please God without faith. It goes on to describe the lives of those who lived lives of faith in action.  This theme of “Living a Life of Faith” will be continued throughout 2013 as we move through the books of the Bible teaching our children what faith in action means for their lives. We will continue the series looking at Paul- Living the Life of Faith- Following Jesus

Acts 9

Memory verses for this rotation:

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:1

But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Hebrews 11:6

 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

For this is what the Lord has commanded us: I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.

Acts 13:47


1.Acts is in the New Testament. It was written about the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the Apostles.

2. God changed Paul’s heart and he began to follow Jesus.

Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.

Acts 9:22

3. When we live a life of faith in God we must follow Jesus and share the Gospel as Paul did..

4. We show our faith in  the Lord by our actions.

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

James 2:26

Read the story and have the children do the following motions:

Do this a few times with the children.  Make it fun for them to do the motions and say the words.  Involving them in active learning is essential for memorization at this age


Build a Road

Have children make a path with the blocks and pretend to walk to Damascus. Let one child pretend to be Saul blinded by the light from heaven and be led by the other children.

This activity is suitable for younger children, but will probably need the teacher to draw the faces (see ideas for faces below). Each child will need a paper bag (with the opening at the bottom when in front of them—so they can use it as a puppet) and some scraps of colored/wrapping paper. On one side of the bag the children make a picture of Saul with collage materials (eg. paste round circle eyes and black paper strips as hair) and drawing (see faces below). Give him an angry face. Attach the first caption. On the other side, again make a picture of Saul with collage materials but with a normal face. Attach the second caption

  1. Saul the persecutor was mean to believers.
  2. Saul the believer teaches about Jesus.



Game: flashlight tag

Play this like freeze tag. The only difference is the “it” person doesn’t touch anyone, they just shine the flashlight on them to make them out. After the game talk about how Jesus seeks after him children just like the “it” person ran after the other kids.

Musical Parade

Give each child a musical instrument to use (tambourine, triangle, etc.) Teach them this song:

Start a parade singing this song while using the instruments.

Storyteller’s Tent

After you have done the keyword Bible study, you should now take your keywords and write them on large separate sheets of paper and place them in different parts of your room as “keyword stations”.

Next, populate each station with some props and costumes that fit that scene in the scripture.  For example, if you have a keyword stations for  “astonished”, it would look like the synagogue where Paul preached to the astonished people.  Jesus Bright Light might be your first station and should have your bright lamps ready!

Everyone participates in each scene, whether as a key character or crowd.  In fact, there’s no reason why everyone can’t be PAUL!   Mix and match and have fun with that. When the teacher shouts “go”, the students will race to “scene 1”, assemble into it as fast as they can, and shout the keyword phrase all together. Then they will move onto to the next scene, and the next.

Practice walking through it slowly first!  Then do it as a speed drama  –timing it on your watch, then do it again to beat the time. If they botch a scene, they have to start over.

Creation Station

Saul’s conversion from the premier persecutor of Christians to the Apostle Paul is a dramatic change. Children will enjoy seeing change or metamorphosis illustrated in numerous ways. Talk about the change from caterpillar to butterfly as an illustration of the change that occurs during conversion.


  • coffee filter
  • washable markers (we used crayola brand)
  • squirt bottle or small glass of water.
  • Pipecleaner

Note:  You can complete this project using food colouring instead of washable markers.  However!  I find this option to be very messy so would not do it with young children (if they get food colouring on their clothing you won’t be able to get it out).  I would only use this option with children over age 10 and even then would want a good amount of supervision and old clothes to be worn.

coffee filter


  • Flatten out a coffee filter on a plate.
  • Scribble the filter with washable markers.   (I try to just let the kids do what they like… younger children will be a bit more random and that’s ok).
  • Use a squirt bottle to spray the coffee filter 2 or 3 times.
  • I like to squirt right in the center of the filter and then sit and watch the water wick the colours over the filter (this takes 4 or 5 minutes).
  • Young children will tend to over wet the filter…  The project still works, but it won’t turn out quite as pretty (the colours tend to blend too much if you soak the filter)  To help prevent this, encourage them to squirt it just once in the middle and watch for a bit for so they can see the process unfold.  You can always add more water later if it doesn’t get wet all the way to the edge after 5 minutes or so.
  • Let dry (this takes about 1/2 an hour, but will take longer if the filter has been soaked by an over-zealous crafter!)
  • butterflyScrunch the coffee filter so you can wrap a pipecleaner around the center.
  • Twist the pipecleaner to hold the coffee filter tightly.  Leave the ends of the pipecleaner about the same length.
  • Trim the pipecleaner as you like (we took off about 2 inches) so the antenna are the length you like and the pipecleaner ends are matching lengths.
  • Curl the pipecleaner (if you like) to make nice antenna.
  • Fluff the wings a little bit to make a perfectly lovely little butterfly!
  • Hang the butterfly with string and attach a card with the verse:Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17
